Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of the vessel Asgard the date upon which his Department purchased it, the cost of purchase, repairs and alterations, the date upon which it was rendered fit for service, and the extent to which it has since been used, including the number of days it has been at sea in active service.

The Asgard was purchased by the State in Meitheamh, 1961, at a cost of £4,325. The total cost of repairs to date is £2,893. No alterations to the vessel were carried out. It was fit for service from Lúnasa, 1961.

During the year 1961, the Asgard was used as a training vessel for an Slua Muirí for a total of 726 hours, involving 32 full days, three week-ends and three night parades. During 1962, a total of 156 hours' training was carried out, involving six full days and three week-ends. During 1963, a total of 541½ hours' training was carried out, involving 11 week-ends. All the training carried out in 1961 and 1962 was familiarisation training while moored in harbour. All the training carried out in 1963 was active sea training.
