Vol. 205 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Evidence by Irish Customs Officers.

7.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a report of a complaint by Mr. E. Richardson, M. P., that customs officers from this State are giving court evidence in British customs cases; and if he will ensure that no further assistance is given by such officers in maintaining the existence of the Border.

I am aware that the Revenue Commissioners authorise their officials to attend as witnesses in customs proceedings in the Six County courts at the request of the British customs authorities. This is in accordance with arrangements for mutual co-operation between the two customs administrations. These arrangements which are of long standing have been of great advantage to the State in the control of illicit border traffic and I am not prepared to take any action which would impair this control.
