The figures are taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year. The 1956 figures include classes — mainly scale-payment subpostmasters, branch managers of employment exchanges and certain part-time employees — whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who were excluded from the Census from 1959 onwards.
