Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Safety of Galway Trawlers.

22.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what steps he has taken to ensure the safety of trawlers based at Galway harbour during the course of the present Galway harbour improvement scheme.

The Galway Harbour Commissioners have a statutory responsibility for providing reasonable facilities and accommodation for vessels using Galway harbour. I reminded the Harbour Commissioners in August last of the necessity of ensuring that suitable safe lying for fishing vessels using the port would be available while the harbour improvement works were in progress.

Do I take it the Minister is satisfied there is available docking for these boats?

I have told the Deputy I have indicated to the Harbour Commissioners that they are responsible for the safe harbouring of fishing vessels. I have no reason to suppose that they will not carry out their duties adequately.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary in charge of Fisheries be satisfied on that score?

The Harbour Commissioners have already done it.

The Deputy may not transfer his question.

I addressed it first to the Parliamentary Secretary in charge of Fisheries and he passed it on to the Minister with no function.
