Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Felling of Trees.

50.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Lands whether the complaint made by Mr. P. J. Gallagher that trees were felled on 32 acres on an estate (details supplied) for which no felling licence was held, has been investigated; and if he will make a statement regarding it.

The issue of felling licences is basically a matter of private concern between the applicant and the Minister for Lands and it is undesirable that the private affairs of any estate should be the subject of discussion in this House.

In this particular case, I am satisfied that the objectives of the Forestry Act, 1946, have not been violated.

May I ask whether the Minister has given any reply to the complainant in regard to this?

I do not know if there is anything I can usefully add to the reply I have given to the Deputy. Hurricane Debbie did a lot of damage to western plantations and some damage was done here. I am satisfied that the people concerned have done their fair share to meet the situation.

In view of the fact that this matter was brought to his attention, does the Minister propose to send a reply to Mr. Gallagher? Is there any objection to his doing that?

I am rather surprised if the person concerned has not got a reply from my Department.
