Vol. 206 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensions.

50.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Paragraph 29 (1) of the Defence Forces Regulation A19, has operated to deprive servicemen of continuous pensionable service, even though they were discharged from a reserved unit for one day only for the purposes of re-enlistment in the forces on the following day; if this regulation continues in force; and, if so, he will arrange that the regulation shall not operate to deprive servicemen of a pension for previous service because of circumstances of this nature.

The regulation referred to by the Deputy relates to the conditions for the grant of An Bonn Seirbhíse and does not in any way affect the qualifying service of non-commissioned officers and men for the purposes of pension or gratuity under the Defence Forces (Pensions) Scheme. Under that Scheme two or more separate periods of service by a non-commissioned officer or man in the permanent Defence Force may be aggregated so as to form one period of qualifying service for pension or gratuity purposes.
