Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scrutiny of Mail.

57.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether letters addressed to places outside the Republic are scrutinised and opened by the General Post Office staff before leaving for places to which they are addressed; if he will indicate the number of persons employed by the General Post Office at this type of work; and if he considers that such a practice is desirable and necessary.

The answer to the first part of the question is no, except in the circumstances set out in Section 56 of the Post Office Act, 1908. The staff time involved could not be segregated from that devoted to other work.
