asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of established civil servants in his Department who retired over the last ten years for health reasons with less than 30 years' service, and the pension payable to each; if he is aware that temporary servants who receive old age pensions are in receipt of much larger pensions; and if, in the light of this, he will take steps to have this position put right.

During the past ten years 70 established civil servants who had less than 30 years' service retired on health grounds from my Department. Thirty-two of these had not sufficient service to qualify under the Superannuation Acts for a pension but they received short service gratuities which ranged from £25 3s. 4d. to £557 14s. 1d. Ten of the 38 pensioners have since died. Particulars of the pensions payable to the remaining 28 are in the form of a tabular statement which I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report. The pensions payable to established civil servants who retire on health grounds are determined in accordance with the provisions of the Superannuation Acts (1834 to 1963). The question of making any amendment to these Acts is one for initiation by the Minister for Finance.
