asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of agricultural employment in the census year 1961 under the following heads: (1) total number of male farm employees on census day over fourteen years of age, (2) number aged fourteen to eighteen years, (3) total number of male farm employees according to the agricultural enumeration, and (4) number of permanent and temporary employees (a) aged fourteen to eighteen years and (b) over eighteen years.
The total number of males aged 14 years and over who, at the 1961 Census of Population, returned their principal occupation as agricultural labourer, was 59,447. Of these 6,093 were under 18 years of age.
The total number of permanent male employees, 14 years of age and over, engaged in farm work on 1st June, 1961, as returned at the Agricultural Statistics Enumeration, was 48,000 and, of these, 3,400 were under 18 years of age. The corresponding total for temporary employees at that date was 32,800 of whom 2,600 were under 18 years of age.
