Vol. 207 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Game.

14.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in order to preserve game stock in border counties, he will approach the Six-County Government with a view to obtaining agreement on the close season for game birds.

As part of the Programme for Economic Expansion, the Government are concerned not only to preserve but also to expand the game stocks in border counties and throughout the country. Grants are provided by my Department to game councils for this purpose.

The question of seeking agreement on close season dates has been under consideration and a preliminary approach was made some time ago to the Belfast Ministry concerned, but because of practical difficulties here it has not so far been feasible to make further progress.

This is one of several matters which could usefully be made the basis of inter-Government consultation and I would welcome an opportunity for such co-operation.
