Vol. 207 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Castle Derelict Building.

12.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance if, having regard to the unsightly appearance of the derelict building across the east side of the lower yard, Dublin Castle, and to the fact that it is seen annually by thousands of foreigners who visit the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity and the Aliens Office, he will have it demolished forthwith; and if he will state the date upon which it was last occupied.

The building referred to which was last occupied by staff about ten years ago is one of a group scheduled for demolition to make way for the erection of new premises for the Stamping Branch of the Revenue Commissioners. It is intended that the work of demolition and the erection of the new building, the planning of which is at an advanced stage, will be carried out as a single contract. At this juncture, however, I am not in a position to say how soon the work will commence but the matter is being expedited as much as possible.
