Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Rates Calculation.

26.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Dublin County Council in calculating rates on premises in respect of which a remission of rates operates do so on a valuation figure brought to the nearest shilling, whereas the figure after remission includes a fraction of a shilling; that as a consequence many ratepayers are called upon to pay rates in excess of their statutory obligations; and that the Dublin County Council refuse to give clear receipts to ratepayers who pay only the statutory amount; and if he will take steps to ensure that the Council make no further demands in excess of their statutory entitlement and refund to the ratepayers concerned all amounts in excess of the statutory amounts which have been collected from them.

The levying and collection of rates in individual cases is a matter for the relevant local authority and any dispute as to the method of calculating the rate demand in a particular case, must be settled between the ratepayer and the local authority concerned.
