Vol. 207 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redemption of National Loans.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that national loans are redeemable at par, to safeguard the interests of minors and wards of chancery who are not able to redeem such loans at the appropriate time.

National loans are redeemable at par on fixed dates as specified in the relevant prospectuses.

Is the Minister aware that the Chief Accountant of the High Court invests money in the court for minors and for people who are wards of court and that substantial sums have been lost by these wards because he invested the moneys in what are called gilt-edged securities?

That may happen, but we are not responsible for that.

I think we are responsible since we take over moneys belonging to those people.

We do not take over the money; we take charge of the money.

Would it not have been better if that money had been put into the Post Office Savings Bank? It would be still there. I have a case here of a young man losing one-third of his award.

If the Deputy would like to pursue that case I suggest he should take the trouble of putting down a question in relation to it.

The Deputy will. The Minister for Finance is not here to answer. I would have expected a more kindly answer from the Tánaiste.

What a hope you have.

I should like to be kind to the Deputy, but sometimes it is difficult.

It is very difficult to be kind to the Tánaiste.
