Vol. 208 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Fluoroacetamide.

16.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps taken by his Department to warn persons against the use in agriculture of substances containing fluoroacetamide; and whether his Department have played any part in the efforts by the manufacturers of such substances to recall them and prevent their further use.

From inquiries made by my Department, it appears that the chemical in question has been used only to a very minor extent in this country, by growers of roses and chrysanthemums. Following a recent report from England that a number of cows were said to have been poisoned by factory waste containing this chemical, an officer of my Department called on the distributors in this country with a view to having the material withdrawn from sale. The distributors had in fact already arranged for its withdrawal. I understand that the bulk of stocks has already been returned by retailers and that the return of the remainder is being actively pursued.
