Vol. 208 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Drugs, Medicines and Hearing Aids.

7.

asked the Minister for Health the number of applications for free drugs and medicines by persons of the middle income group which were (a) approved and (b) refused in Kildare constituency since this scheme came into operation.

I presume that the Deputy's question relates to the arrangements made by health authorities, following the issue of a circular letter from my Department in September, 1961, which reminded health authorities that they are empowered to supply drugs and medicines, free of charge, under section 14 of the Health Act, 1953, to persons who, because of the financial hardship involved, are unable to meet the cost of these items, even though they do not hold medical cards. In the dispensary districts which are included in the kildare constituency 60 such applications have been approved since September, 1961, and two applications have been refused.

asked the Minister for Health the number of applications for hearing aids which were (a) approved and (b) refused in Kildare constituency since this scheme came into operation.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the hearing aid service provided by the National Organisation for Rehabilitation, which came into operation during 1963, under which eligible patients who are recommended for hearing aids by ENT specialists are referred by health authorities to the organisation for the supply of suitable hearing aids.

A total of 14 hearing aids have been supplied under this service to persons living within the Kildare electoral constituency area, and no applications have been refused. Thirteen of these hearing aids were supplied by Kildare County Council, whose area covers most of the constituency, and one hearing aid was supplied by Meath County Council, in respect of its portion of the constituency.

From recent inquiries I have made. I understand that there is not at present any unsatisfied application for a hearing aid in the area.
