Vol. 208 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Derelict Motor Vehicles.

115.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if, having regard to the increasing number of abandoned derelict motor vehicles on public streets, particularly in Dublin City, he will have effective steps taken, by the introduction of legislation if necessary, to have such derelict vehicles removed immediately and to prevent any further dumping of cars on public streets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

116.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if he will have a census made by the Garda Síochána of derelict motor vehicles abandoned on the streets of Dublin; if, in view of the increasing number of such abandoned obstructions which constitute traffic hazards and dangers to children, he will have effective steps taken to prevent further abandonment of cars on public roadways; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions 115 and 116 together

In practice, the removal of derelict vehicles involves not only the provision of transport but of facilities for cutting up the vehicle afterwards.

I am informed that a contract has been made between the Dublin Corporation and a commercial concern for the removal of derelict vehicles from the streets and, in the recent past, a total of 47 such vehicles have been removed. On the last count, there were still 17 awaiting removal and it is hoped that this will be proceeded with shortly.

Mr. Ryan

Will the Minister consider introducing legislation to try to deal with this problem at its source, by providing more severe penalties for persons who put these obstructions on the public street in the first place?

Yes, we have something like that under consideration at present.

Mr. Ryan

The Minister will agree that it is getting much worse.
