Vol. 208 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Limits.

41.

asked the Minister for Lands if boats of seventy-five feet and upwards in length are free to fish (a) within the three mile limit, and (b) within the six mile limit; and what are the points on a boat from which length measurements are taken.

No vessel exceeding 75 feet overall in length shall be used for sea-fishing except under and in accordance with a licence under Section 9 of the Sea Fisheries Act, 1952. Licences are granted for specified periods and may be subject to such conditions as I think fit. For the current period licences are subject to the condition that the vessels shall not fish within the exclusive fishery limits of the State. As these limits have not yet been extended beyond three nautical miles from the baseline, licensed vessels are at present free to fish between three and six miles. The overall length of a vessel is measured from the foremost point on the stem to the aftermost point on the stern.
