Vol. 208 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational Teachers.

50.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of qualified vocational teachers in the Republic who are (a) male, (b) female, (c) wholetime and (d) part-time; and the estimated total number required; and if he will take steps to ensure that almost fifty vacancies now available for qualified teachers will be filled without delay.

In the school-year 1962-63, there were in the vocational teaching service 1,826 qualified whole-time teachers, of whom 1,207 were male, and 619 female. The number of part-time teachers employed in the same school-year was 1,896, comprising 1,255 males and 641 females. Because of the changing and developing nature of the vocational education service, it is not possible to estimate precisely what the requirements in the matter of teaching personnel may be at any particular time. My Department, however, has the situation constantly under observation, and appropriate steps are being taken to ensure that an adequate supply of teachers will be available for present and future requirements.

All teaching requirements are at present being adequately catered for.
