Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holidays of Insurance Staffs.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce how many English insurance societies or companies operating in this country have not granted holidays with pay to their staffs under the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1961; and if he will name the societies or companies concerned.

I have received a complaint alleging that one British insurance society operating in this country has failed to allow holidays with pay in accordance with the Act as modified by the regulations made on the 22nd July, 1963. As I indicated in reply to a question in Dáil Éireann on 27th November last, I have been advised that the effect of the regulations is to confer entitlement to holidays with pay on any insurance agent to whom they apply, in respect of the employment year of that agent which commenced on or after the 22nd July, 1963. It is, of course, open to an employer to allow holidays at any time within an employment year. I intend to have the complaint referred to investigated further at the appropriate time, and, in the meantime, I do not consider that it would be right that I should name the society concerned.
