Vol. 210 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civilian Suits for Retiring Soldiers.

48.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of civilian suits issued to retiring soldiers whether they are made to measure or made in standard sizes; and, if the latter, how many are now in stock, when they were purchased, the name and address of the contractor and where the stocks are kept.

Supplies of civilian suits for issue to retiring soldiers are normally purchased in standard sizes. However, in cases where men's measurements do not conform to standard size rolls, suits are specially ordered to the measurements of the individuals concerned.

At present a total of 17 civilian suits are held in Army Stores in Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Athlone and Haulbowline. Eight of those suits were purchased in 1962, and the remaining nine have been in stock since the end of the Emergency.

Contracts for the supply of civilian suits are placed as a result of competitive tendering and it would be contrary to established practice to disclose any particulars regarding contractors.

Mr. Ryan

Did I understand the Minister to say the number was 17 or 70?

Mr. Ryan

At the present rate of three of these issued per year, this is expected to cover another six years?

No, less one.

Mr. Ryan

One would have to go naked. Do I understand there are nine in addition to 17?

Does anybody take these suits?

They are not very popular.

Would the Minister say if it is the way the suits are made or the material from which they are made which causes them to be so unpopular?

I understand the more modern ones are better designed.

Mr. Ryan

Would the Minister say if they are mothproof or what steps are taken to keep them mothproof?

Precautions are taken.
