Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reconstruction Grants.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many years must elapse before a person who has received a reconstruction grant can qualify for a second grant in respect of the same premises; and how long a new house must be erected before it can qualify for a reconstruction grant.

Normally a period of 15 years must elapse between the payment of a housing grant and a second grant for the same house. Section 4 of the Housing (Loans and Grants) Act, 1962, sets out the circumstances in which a second grant may be paid within the 15-year period.

Does the Minister appreciate the fact that the second grant is regarded as entirely inadequate and is extremely trivial in relation to the cost of building today?

I do not quite accept that. The second grants are being sought and apparently are doing quite a useful job where they apply.

Would the Minister say whether the second grant exceeds the amount of £40 in many instances and would he indicate what building reconstruction can be done today for such a sum?

I cannot answer that off the cuff. If the Deputy gives notice, I shall be glad to supply specific information.
