Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Overtime Working in Air Traffic Control Services.

46.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether in view of the considerable amounts paid in overtime to persons working in the aviation radio and air traffic control services he is quite satisfied that, in view of the serious responsibility of the persons involved, overtime working may not lead to serious repercussions in air safety and on passengers in aeroplanes using these services.

The amount of extra attendance given by any individual person working in the air traffic control service is comparatively slight, being less than three hours per week on an average, time-off being allowed in lieu. Personnel in the aviation radio service are not, in general, directly concerned with air safety and paid overtime is worked by such personnel when circumstances necessitate it. I am satisfied that the arrangements for extra attendance in the services do not in any way give rise to a risk to air safety.
