Vol. 213 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fisheries Research Ship.

40.

asked the Minister for Lands the dates on which the research ship Cú Feasa visited the County Donegal coast during the past 12 months, and the data acquired by such visits.

The programme of research and exploratory work undertaken by the Cú Feasa over the past 12 months did not necessitate visiting the fishing grounds off the Donegal coast.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary explain how they are going to convey news to the fishermen that fish are available at a certain spot unless the boat visits the area?

The Deputy is aware that the Cú Feasa visited the area off the Donegal coast in the past and was unable to report findings for the fishermen because the particular fish which the Deputy thought would be available were not present.

Because the boat came on a summer cruise and not at a period when fish are expected in the locality. If the Parliamentary Secretary is referring to my request concerning matje herring, he can take it from me that the boat did search but not in the usual locality in which they are found.

We can always hire Spanish trawlers and solve our difficulty.

(Interruptions.)

A lot of cod.
