Vol. 213 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Differential Rents.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the many anomalies which arise from the present position of having different systems of differential rents in each local authority area; and if he will carry out a general survey of such systems throughout the country with a view to introducing a standard system to apply to the whole country.

I am aware that differential rent schemes in operation by local authorities vary as between one scheme and another and it is my policy to encourage these authorities to smooth out anomalies by treating their total housing estate as one unit for renting purposes. As regards the suggested introduction of a standard differential scheme for the whole country I should be reluctant to interfere with the freedom of each local authority to adopt the particular type of scheme suited to local circumstances.
