Vol. 213 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turkeys.

53.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, owing to the fluctuating price in the turkey market, he will fix a floor price per pound to protect producers.

The answer is in the negative. Turkey prices at present are better than in the last couple of years.

They are, because they are scarce.

Will the Minister agree that the prices of turkeys are fluctuating?

I suppose there is always some element of fluctuation in a market of this sort but there is no doubt that turkey prices will be better this year than last year.

You have the turkeys nearly exterminated.

Does the Deputy want cheaper prices?

No, but we want more turkeys.

(Interruptions.)

That is one item I do not produce myself.

If prices are fluctuating, that is the very reason why the Minister should protect the producer and see that he gets the correct price.

If the Minister would produce a list of what he does produce, it would be very interesting.

The Minister has admitted he is not himself a turkey producer.

If I were, I should be a good one.

Will Deputies please allow questions to proceed?
