Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Redundancy.

45.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what proposals he has concerning the retraining of and compensation terms for persons rendered redundant in modernisation schemes in industry.

Retraining and redundancy compensation are aspects of the wider question of a national manpower policy. As already announced by the Taoiseach, the Government have set up a small inter-departmental committee of senior officers to examine and report quickly on the development of agencies to meet the foreseeable needs in national manpower policy and also on the most effective method of making financial provision for redundant workers. I understand that the Committee are nearing the completion of their task.

Could the Minister say when he thinks he will have a reply? When he says "quickly", does he mean weeks, months, or years, as usual?

I said they are nearing the completion of their task. I expect to get it quickly.

In weeks or months? It can be another couple of years, presumably?

There is no hurry about that.
