Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Applications.

40.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants for telephones in (1) Galway and (2) West Galway; and if he can make a statement as to when it is hoped to complete the installation of the telephones.

The numbers are: (1) 180; (2) 110 excluding Galway city. Arrangements have been made to offer service to about 60 per cent of the applicants within the next few months. It is hoped to attend to most of the remainder during the coming financial year.

Will the Minister indicate what gives priority? Does the fact that there is a line close by give priority?

It does not. There is a list of people entitled to priority.

There is another reason which one can guess.

41.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applications for telephones in Carlow town and county; and when it is expected these applicants will receive service.

The numbers are 95 and 110 respectively.

Service will be given within the next few months to about 30 applicants in Carlow town, and to most of the remainder during the year. Installations in the county are still dependent on progress with trunking work in the area, but it is expected that clearance of the oldest cases will begin in a few months' time, and as many others as possible will be dealt with in conjunction with these.
