Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clontarf Girls' School.

48.

asked the Minister for Education what is the position in regard to the provision of a new school for girls at Clontarf, Dublin, which is urgently needed.

I understand that the working drawings are nearing completion. When these have been completed the manager's architect will have to arrange to have bills of quantities taken out before tenders can be invited.

Will the Minister say if detailed plans have yet been submitted to the Department?

The final working drawings are in course of preparation by the manager's architects.

They have not yet been submitted to the Department?

I do not know that they need to be submitted to the Department but I think, when they have been completed, the bills of quantity will be prepared. The preliminary work which had to be cleared with the Department of Education has been done, as far as I can gather.

Is the Minister able to say when the work will be put out to tender?

It is in private hands now. It is in the hands of the architect. That depends on the speed of his office.

Is the Minister aware that it is over two years since draft plans were first submitted to the Department; that this is a matter of great urgency in the parish; that the existing building is in a tumbledown condition and is grossly inadequate? Is the Minister concerned about that?

I am very concerned and the sketch plans which have to be submitted to my Department and to the Office of Public Works were submitted and have been approved. It goes back to the architect.

It is taking a long time.
