Vol. 215 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commission on Mental Illness.

23.

asked the Minister for Health how long he anticipates it will take him to study the recommendations of the Commission on Mental Illness; and when he expects to make a decision as to the putting into effect of the proposals of the Commission, particularly with regard to mental handicap.

Mr. O'Malley

The Commission on Mental Illness has not yet reported and, consequently, I take it that the Deputy's question relates to the report of the Commission of Inquiry on Mental Handicap which was submitted to my predecessor on 30th March. This report has since been published and copies have been sent to all Deputies. In addition, copies have been sent to various voluntary organisations concerned with the services for the mentally handicapped, to Government Departments and to other interests. Observations, if any, on the recommendations in the report have been invited by the end of next month. The report is, also, being examined urgently in my Department.

If the Deputy repeats his question early in July, I should be then in a position, having reviewed the replies received, to let him have fuller information.
