Vol. 215 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Education.

77.

asked the Minister for Education what plans his Department have to include the teaching of physical education in the curriculum of secondary schools.

My Department's rules and programme lay down that all recognised secondary schools are required to provide for the teaching of physical training or organised athletic games.

I am conscious of the fact, however, that there is scope for improvement in the provision for physical education and am hopeful that various steps being taken by my Department will prove beneficial. These steps include initially the recent appointment of an inspector of physical education and prescribing that secondary schools qualifing for a building grant must include a gymnasium in the accommodation being provided. I expect to be announcing further measures in the near future.
