Vol. 216 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Warble Prevention.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he proposes to inaugurate a scheme to compensate farmers for losses of cattle as a result of dressing for warble prevention.

My Department has been having discussions about this with the various organisations concerned with the warble fly eradication campaign. I am very hopeful that a satisfactory insurance scheme can be introduced when the new dressing season commences in September.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will ensure that there is a preventative on the market that will be one hundred per cent effective before he makes it compulsory for farmers to have warble-free cattle.

I am satisfied that the recommended systemic dressings against warble fly are very effective when properly used.

In a very small number of cases they may not result in the total elimination of the warbles and I shall have due regard to this aspect in drafting the proposed Order relating to the sale or exposure for sale of warbled cattle.
