Vol. 216 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Buildings.

53.

asked the Minister for Education the total capital provided by the State in each of the past five years for the purposes of construction and extension of secondary school buildings.

The capitation grants payable to secondary schools contain an element of capital contribution towards building costs. Since, however, within these grants no particular amount is earmarked in relation to the element concerned, it is not possible to furnish the information sought by the Deputy.

The scheme of building grants for secondary schools which was introduced last year provides for a direct State contribution towards building costs. A number of projects approved under this scheme will shortly reach the stage at which grants will be payable.

Would the Minister not agree that he could have answered the question by saying "nil"?

I would not agree at all. I think the Deputy must not have listened to my reply. Perhaps he would like to study it again and if he is still of the same opinion, he might put down another question.
