asked the Taoiseach whether it will be possible to provide a more detailed analysis of imports than that contained in table 4 (b) of Economic Statistics; and, in particular, whether a breakdown of the classification, Materials for further Production, can be given, distinguishing between capital goods and consumer goods.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Economic Statistics.
As the Deputy knows details of imports are available for each of the headings of the Official Import List and the list is classified and sub-classified into sections, divisions and chapters. "Use classification" of the kind mentioned in the last portion of his question is feasible only to the extent to which the headings of the import list are assignable to a particular category of the classification in question. This limits the categories for which data can be compiled and, in particular, makes it impossible to distinguish satisfactorily between materials used for the production of capital goods and consumers' goods since many items can be used for the production of either. No information is available at the time of importation to make it possible to discover their ultimate utilisation.
