Vol. 216 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Building Industry.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the number employed directly in the building industry, and as far as possible the number employed in allied trades.

No comprehensive current statistics are available of the total number of persons engaged in the building industry. However, with certain exceptions, manual workers 16 years of age and over in the building industry and in certain specified employments in civil engineering and the painting trade are compulsorily insured against interruption of employment due to bad weather. On the basis of the number of stamps sold in each year in respect of such insurance it is estimated that the average weekly number of employees in these activities during the year ended 31 March, 1965 was 36,580. The sale of stamps in the latter half of 1964 was affected by the trade disputes in the building and builders providers' trades but it is not possible to estimate the effect of these on the average figure for the year.
