Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Troops in Cyprus.

5.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the Secretary General of the United Nations has approached this country to provide units of the Irish Army for further duty in Cyprus; and, if so, what decision has been taken on the matter.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Security Council mandate for UNFICYP expires on 26th June, 1965. Pending a decision by the Security Council to renew the mandate, the Secretary-General is not authorised to request units for duty in Cyprus beyond that date. The Security Council is due to meet on 15th June to consider the matter.

6.

asked the Minister for External Affairs the total expenditure to date incurred by this country in respect of the Army units in Cyprus.

For the period from April, 1964 when our first contingent went to Cyprus up to 26th June, 1965, when the current mandate expires the net extra expenditure is estimated at £653,000. This sum represents the extra allowances we pay to our troops while they are serving in Cyprus.
