Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Store Pig Trade With France.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the uneconomic prices obtainable for store pigs and bonhams, he will investigate the possibility of having the French trade reopened.

I do not agree that the prices obtainable for store pigs and bonhams are uneconomic and I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a question on this matter on 25th May. My Department has had no requests during the past year for licences to export pigs to France. Imports of live pigs into France are, of course, subject to levies under the EEC Pigmeat Regulations.

Is it not true to say that the Department were not interested in the export of live pigs to France which would have been very useful, because despite what the Minister says, the price is uneconomic, considering the present price of foodstuffs?

I do not accept either statement.

The facts are there.
