Vol. 216 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Milling Industry.

23.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is prepared to take powers to prevent the development of monopoly in the flour milling industry.

My functions under the Agricultural Produce (Cereals) Acts briefly are to license wheat mills, to appoint milling quotas and to operate an import licensing system for wheaten products. I do not propose to seek an extension of these functions.

I have no evidence that there is any likelihood of a monopoly position developing in the industry. If at any time, however, a situation should develop which would warrant an investigation by the Fair Trade Commission, I would not hesitate to ask the Commission to make such an investigation.
