Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limit on Dublin-Sligo Road.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government why the 30 mph zone on that part of the Dublin-Sligo road passing north-east of Boyle was replaced by a 40 mph zone considering that this part of the road carries the traffic to and from the Catholic Church, the new infant school, the convent schools, the golf links and the sports field.

Following the setting out of the built-up area speed limits in 1963, a considerable volume of complaint was expressed to the effect that there was a lack of uniformity and in particular that 30 mile an hour zones extended too far outside built-up areas. These factors militated against respect for the speed limits and made enforcement difficult. Accordingly, I decided to have the application of the limits reviewed by a central team. As a first result, the limits on the arterial routes have been amended in various respects, and I am satisfied that the new zones secure uniformity and take account of traffic conditions as far as it is possible to do so. The change in Boyle formed part of the changes generally made and fits in with the general pattern.

The road in question is a wide road with good visibility and little development adjacent to it. For that reason it was felt that the imposition of a speed limit of 30 miles per hour was unrealistic. Because of the schools adjacent to the road it was felt, however, that some restriction was necessary, and a 40 mph speed limit was imposed.
