Vol. 217 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soap Powders.

69.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce legislation to make it necessary for soap manufacturers to show the net weights on packets of soap powder.

I do not think it would be desirable to introduce legislation of the kind suggested by the Deputy until decisions can be reached on the general question of consumer protection. This is a matter which I am keeping under review.

When the Minister has the matter under review, would he also consider adverting to the practice of selling what appear to be 2 lb. loaves which actually weigh six ozs. less and the practice of selling packets of butter, which people believe contain 16 ozs. but which, in fact, contain 14 ozs?

The lightweight loaf was a Coalition device.

It was a Fianna Fáil practice. Brú-cháirde.
