Vol. 219 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballymun Housing Scheme.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the proposed houses in the Ballymun scheme, Dublin, will commence to become available; and when the first block of flats will be ready for tenants.

The corporation has been informed that two-storey houses will be completed at the rate of one house a day from 1st December and that a group of 21 houses will be available for occupation before Christmas. Further groups of houses will be handed over for occupation according as site organisation permits. The construction of flats is scheduled to commence in January, 1966, reaching eighty flats a month in June. As the construction programme is spread over a number of blocks, all flats erected cannot be occupied immediately on completion. The timing of the first occupancy of flats is under examination with the contractors in the light of the general programme of site operations and I expect that this programme will allow for the occupation of as many flats as possible in the first half of 1966.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether or not the houses will be handed over as soon as they are structurally ready or will the handing over be delayed, pending reconstruction of the rents to be charged for them?

The question of handing over will depend entirely on the site operations. It is quite possible that some of the houses may be completed but that site works will not allow of their being occupied.

Have we an assurance that they will be handed over on the basis of existing rents and that there will be no delay on that account?

That is something I do not know.

As the people take up occupancy of the houses, will amenities be available for them?

Shops, sewerage and water, roads, schools, and so on.

When they do allow people to occupy the houses, I assume the maximum facilities will be available in relation to the programme.
