Vol. 220 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Under-Age Army Recruits.

84.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of each of the last five years the number of Army recruits who were discovered to be under age; and why a more stringent examination of the age of applicants is now being made.

The numbers of recruits who were discharged from the permanent Defence Force, including the Naval Service, in the years 1961 to 1965 inclusive for the reason that they were under age on enlistment, are as follows:

1961

32

1962

25

1963

19

1964

8

1965

47

It was recently decided on the recommendation of the Army legal authorities and for purposes connected with the better administration of discipline in the permanent Defence Force to obtain verification of the ages of all men enlisting for general service.

Has the birth certificate to be produced, on application?

Yes, on enlistment.
