Vol. 220 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance Company Housing Loans.

95.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his Department obtains from insurance companies particulars of the total amounts advanced by them annually by way of house purchase loans; if so, the total amounts so advanced in each of the last ten years; and, if the information is not obtained, if he will ask insurance companies to furnish it.

Insurance companies are not required by law to supply this information and I do not consider it necessary to ask them for it.

Does the Minister obtain from insurance companies figures of the amount of money they have lent and the proportion of their assets which are on loan?

The total amount of mortgages on all classes of property is got but not the information the Deputy has asked about.

I suppose the Minister is aware that statistics for housing finance are grossly inadequate. Would the Minister not consider it wise to obtain this information when the Government have, for the first time, recognised the need for national planning?

Questions Nos. 96 and 97 postponed.
