Vol. 220 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Reserve Training.

38.

asked the Minister for Defence if, having regard to the considerable concern caused by reports of intentions not to call members of the Reserve for training, he will make a statement on the matter.

The matter is being considered in conjunction with the preparation of the Estimates for the Public Services for 1966-67 and a decision will be announced as soon as possible.

The Minister is no doubt aware that many members of the Reserve have unofficially been informed that they will not be needed for training this year. Is that the likely outcome of the present consideration ?

I have no knowledge of any unofficial information that has been conveyed to these people.

May we take it, then, that these people will be called up ?

I said the matter is being considered in conjunction with the preparation of the Estimate for 1966-67 and that I shall make a statement soon.

There is an awful lot of bad news coming in a month or two. Why do you not admit it?

There are county council elections and a Presidential election coming up.

I am not making a decision at this point of time. I am not in a position to make a statement.

Except that they are not being called. The ones that should have been called up to now have not been called: the Minister knows that.

It is like the case of the Kennedy Memorial.

Deputy Tully is the only businessman in the Labour Party.
