Vol. 220 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clondalkin (Dublin) Postal Facilities.

55.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inadequacy of the post office and postal facilities in Clondalkin, County Dublin; and, if so, when the necessary improvements will be provided.

The accommodation at Clondalkin Post Office is somewhat limited but reasonably adequate for normal requirements. The Sub-Postmaster plans to extend the accommodation available to the public. Otherwise the facilities available are regarded as satisfactory.

Is the Minister aware of the enormous increase in population in the Clondalkin area over the last couple of years? Is he further aware that it was simply chaotic over Christmas and that an ordinary sub-post office is completely inadequate and useless in Clondalkin at the present time?

The Minister is well aware of the deficiencies of the office and arrangements are being made for the extension of the floor space. There is a 9 foot counter, which is not bad and, in normal circumstances, the space is adequate but provision is being made to enlarge it.

Is the Minister aware that the restrictions which apply to small post offices down the country in relation to postal orders and that kind of thing are completely out of line in Clondalkin, and that there were times when they were a fortnight without postal orders? That is my information.

I am not aware of that.
