Vol. 220 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) Vocational School.

69.

andMr. Clinton asked the Minister for Education when a vocational school for girls will be erected in Ballyfermot, Dublin, to meet the urgent needs of that district.

I cannot say when a vocational school for girls will be erected in Ballyfermot, Dublin. The provision of such a vocational school is a matter in the first instance for the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee and my power is one of sanction only.

Could the Minister say if he has any proposals from the vocational education committee?

I have not.

Does the Minister recall that the European Social Charter, to which Ireland is a party, contains a covenant guaranteeing vocational education for all citizens and, that being so, will he treat as a matter of extreme urgency the question of providing without delay vocational training for girls in Ballyfermot, an area larger than the city of Waterford?

I have no proposals in this regard from the committee, but if I receive them, they will obtain sympathetic consideration from me.

There will be no delay? The axe will not be used as it is being used elsewhere?
