Vol. 220 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Level Crossing.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what steps Córas Iompair Éireann propose to take to make the level crossing at Clooncundra, outside Castlerea, County Roscommon safe for traffic; if Córas Iompair Éireann have a caretaker or gate keeper at this crossing; and if so what are his duties.

The Clooncundra level crossing referred to by the Deputy is an accommodation crossing and CIE are under no obligation in law to provide attendance there. This arises because there was no public road there at the time the railway was built. It is the responsibility in law of the users of the crossing to open and shut the gates themselves.

CIE have found it necessary in practice to provide limited attendance at the crossing but the duties of the crossing-keeper have been and are confined to closing the gates when users neglect to close them as they frequently do.

Nevertheless CIE are investigating the possibility of improving the service at this crossing.
