Vol. 220 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Allocations in West of Ireland.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands what number of 45 acre units have been allotted in the past year in the West of Ireland.

Land Commission statistics are not kept in such a way that the number of allotments of a certain area can be ascertained readily. As I informed the House on 27th November, 1963, when speaking on the Second Stage of the Land Bill, 1963 (Vol. 206, Cols. 67 and 68), the Land Commission have adjusted their working practices since 1962 so as to aim where practicable at the achievement of a family farm unit of 40-45 acres of good land in the land settlement programme. Holdings and enlargements are being planned in all areas to provide farms of this size or the equivalent in land of varied quality and all applicants with holdings below that level are eligible for consideration for enlargements.

All new holdings created by the Land Commission are to the 40-45 acre standard. As of now the main relevant figures at my disposal for the nine congested counties are that a total of 14,500 acres was distributed amongst 796 allottees by way of enlargements, migration and rearrangement.

No policy carried out yet.
