Vol. 220 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Traffic Gardaí.

58.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider the feasibility of Gardaí on point duty in Cork city during the winter months wearing white coats to enable motorists to discern them more readily.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they consider that the existing arrangements are adequate.

There is only one traffic point permanently manned and the pointsman there, who wears white sleevelets and white gloves, is easily discernible from all directions.

Gardaí on ordinary beat duty do occasional point duty at 11 places at peak traffic hours and, during the winter months, they wear white sleevelets and white gloves; one of them, because of difficulties of visibility at his particular point, wears a white coat.
