Vol. 220 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Textbooks in Irish.

72.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the dearth of new spelling and reading material such as textbooks, class readers etc. in the Irish language for both senior and middle divisions of national schools; and, if so, if he contemplates any immediate steps towards remedying this handicap to students as the new spelling is now obligatory for fourth standard national schools and there is not even one fifth class Irish reader available in the new spelling.

I am not aware that there is a dearth of new spelling and reading material in the Irish language for senior and middle division of national schools. The published list of texts approved for use in national schools issued prior to the current year, contains an adequate number of textbooks for the IV and V standards. In addition, two further readers in the Irish language have been approved for V standard since the list was published.
