Vol. 220 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Camps for Itinerants.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the names of local authorities which have not yet purchased sites for the development of itinerant camps.

I am not aware that any local authority has so far purchased land for the development of itinerant camps. I understand however that some local authorities are in the course of negotiation with owners for the purchase of such land. I would point out that a number of local authorities may be in a position to establish camps on land already in their possession.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is satisfied with the progress made to date by Galway County Council in carrying out his recommendations in regard to itinerancy.

I understand that the Galway County Council are at present endeavouring to establish four sites for itinerant camps in four selected areas in the county. Finality has not been reached in the matter, due primarily to the difficulties being experienced in securing suitable sites.
